Vinnitsa Medical Institute n.a. N.I. Pirogov and since 1994 the University (VSMU) have been training competent doctors more 85 years. For this period about 43 thousands of specialists have been trained, who work in Ukraine and in many countries of the world.

The University have also trained more than 6,5 thousand of doctors from 93 countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, who have received at the University " Doctor of Medicine" diploma. They render medical aid to the population of their countries, work in higher educational medical establishments, head state and private medical establishments.
For years of existence VNMU became in Ukraine multiprofile centre of training, specialization, improvement of medical, scientific-pedagogical staff with significant scientific-methodical, experimental work in all branches of medicine. In 1922 the first President of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, academician D.K. Zabolotny has raised the question to the government bodies about the necessity of opening higher medical educational institution in Vinnytsya.

The predecessors of VNMU were Vinnitsa Pharmaceutical Institute (1921-1936), Vinnitsa branch of All-Ukrainian Institute of extra-mural medical education (1930), subsequently (1932) reorganized in the Evening industrial medical institute with two faculties - medical-preventive and paediatric.

Vinnitsa Medical Institute was created in 1934 on the basis of the Evening industrial medical institute. In 1960 by the Decree of Presidium of the Supreme Body of USSR the institute was given the name of N.I. Pirogov. In 1984 the institute was awarded the order "Budge of Honour" for success in training doctors and teaching staff, rendering assistance to practical public health services.
In 1994 Vinnitsa medical institute was accredited on IV (the highest) level, and its status was changed to university (Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 408, dated 15.06.94). From that time the institute was named Vinnitsa State Pirogov Memorial Medical University.

Taking into account nation-wide and international recognition of results of its activity, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine L.D. Kuchma, dated June, 19 2002, # 560/2002 the University was given the national status.
In the medium of medical circles of Ukraine, foreign countries VNMU is known by high quality of specialists' training, high requests to tutoring and exemplary organization of educational process. By expert inquiry under the international program "Rating of high schools", conducted by International Personnel Academy, VNMU is the only one among medical higher schools, which in 1995, 1997, 2000 was determined among higher state educational establishments of Ukraine as one of the best institutions, which prepares the most qualified specialists.

Under the totals of rating of 1997 and 2000 the University was also determined among the best educational medical establishments and was awarded with the special Diploma.
From year to year after the University's foundation improved its material base, created favourable conditions for tuition of the students, tutoring of the scientific-pedagogical personnel, constantly improving methodical-educational and research work.

The first intake of students in 1934 was conducted on medico- preventive (170 persons) and pediatric (195 persons) faculties. Institute was headed by A. F. Smolyanskaya.
The institute gradually was replenished with lecturers and great amount of students. In 1940 19 professors and 6 associated professors already had worked at 34 chairs of the institute. This year the fifth graduation of 197 doctors was held. In the fortieth the main building was constructed, in which all theoretical chairs, hostel on 1000 places were placed; the main clinical base of the institute - regional hospital named after N.I. Pirogov was enlarged. In 1941 the majority of the students and 150 graduates together with the teachers went to the fronts of the Second World War.

After liberation of Vinnytsya on March 20, 1944 the period of active restoring of institute began. In April, 1944, 472 students began to study at different faculties. In 1950 the necessary conditions for realization of full-bodied educational process on theoretical and clinical chairs were created at the institute. This year among 34 chairs 13 were headed by doctors of science and 19 by candidates of science. In 1958 restoration of main building was finished, the stadium and vivarium, hostel for 632 places were built. In 1969 2235 students were taught at two faculties of the institute (medical and paediatric), and the teaching process was conducted by 26 doctors of science, 106 candidates of science.

A lot of new had appeared in the institute in connection with election in 1988 as the rector V.M.Moroz, honoured scientist and technologist of Ukraine, doctor of medical science, professor. Being the graduate of Vinnitsa Medical Institute he has passed all administrative stages at the institute: the secretary of the scientific board, deputy of the dean, dean of the paediatric faculty, pro-rector on teaching and educational work. The talent of V.M. Moroz as organizer, scientist, tutor and chief almost of seven-thousand university's personnel is directed on improving of quality of preparation of specialists, introduction of new educational technologies, modernizing and creation of modern educational base, active use of management and marketing requests pertaining the improvement of tuition conditions and social defence of the students and teachers.
In 1994 the faculty of Dentistry was organized and up-to-date equipped, in 2000 the education at the faculty of Pharmacy began. During the last years the educational buildings were repaired, the main part of the new educational building was put into operation, the computerization of the university's chairs was conducted, contacts between chairs of the university and establishments of practical public health were extended. The centre of new information technologies and the scientific-research centre were opened.

Now training of specialists is carried out at 53 chairs, where the competent scientific-pedagogical staff works. Among them 93 doctors of science, professors, 17 academicians and 5 members- correspondents of Academies of Science, 421 candidates of science, associated professors. 7 lecturers have honorary title of the Honoured Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine and honoured workers of higher school. Some of research workers of the University are the laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine.

In 2004 the International links department for recruitment of international students and extension of international collaboration in different spheres of the University's activity was organized.
The University has traditions in educational, research activity, organization of the students' leisure, maintaining of heartly relations with the graduates.

Among the graduates of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya there are rectors of universities (academician V.N. Kazakov, academician V.M.Moroz, professor V.D. Bilyk, associated professor M.P. Rudyuk), director of Scientific-Research Institute (academician Y.A. Zozulya, Institute of Neurosurgery, vice-president of Ukrainian Academy of Medical Science), former deputy minister of public health (professor A.N. Zelinskiy), head expert of the ministry of public health (professor A.I. Treshchinskiy, anesthesiology and intensive care).



Since 1977 the university trains foreign citizens. Being the state educational institution, National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya in its activity is guided by the Constitution of Ukraine, Law of Ukraine "About Higher Education", other acts of Ukrainian legislation, Regulations of the University. The education of the foreign citizens is regulated by the law of Ukraine "About the Legal Status of the Foreigners and Stateless Persons" and the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine 1 36 (26.02.1993) "About Education of the Foreign Citizens in Ukraine" and the Regulations of VNMU, with the normative documents regulating educational process, it is possible to acquaint oneself at the dean's office for foreign students.


The activity of the University on training of doctors among the foreign citizens, international collaboration and international relations are coordinated by the Vice-rector for international links. In the structure of management of the international citizens' education function the department for international links, the dean's office of the preparatory faculty and the dean's office for undergraduate and postgraduate international students. The preparatory faculty was organized in 1979. It has modern well equipped educational base with necessary educational-methodical maintenance. Modern design and equipment of the preparatory faculty, the necessary package of educational-methodical materials in a combination to the careful attitude of the competent teachers facilitate the adaptation of the preparatory faculty students to conditions of staying and education in Ukraine.

The program of training provides the study of Russian language, Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. 63 teachers ensure the educational process.

At the preparatory faculty the atmosphere of confidence between the teachers and foreign students is created, that promotes the education.
The graduates of the preparatory faculty are admitted to the first year of studies at different faculties ofVNMU. In total more than 4000 foreigners from 62 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America completed the course of study at the preparatory faculty.

The University is included in the state register of the participants of external economic relations (certificate PR # 1305/3978), has the licence of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, which allows to train 500 persons at the preparatory faculty simultaneously.


Post-graduate training is carried out in 53 specialities. Master of Medical Science Course is carried out in 31 specialities, at the University the education is carried out in the following specialities: "General Medicine", "Paediatrics", "Medical Psychology", "Dentistry", "Pharmacy", "Clinical Pharmacy".

Since 1977 the education of the foreign students is carried out at General Medical and Paediatric Faculties, since 1992 - at Medical, since 1994 - at Dental and since 2000 - at Pharmaceutical Faculties. More than 6500 doctors in total were prepared and awarded the title of Doctor of Medicine. The foreign graduates of the University undergo post-graduate studies in clinical ordinatura - specialized training in medicine (since 1981), Master of Medical Science course (since 2003), advanced training course (since 1984), pure post-graduate studies (since 1989). 30 foreign graduates on completion of the post-graduate studies were awarded the scientific degree Doctor of Philosophy and Medicine - M.D., Ph.D.; training in clinical ordinatura have completed 165 persons, 34 persons completed advanced training course. Among the graduates of VNMU are the professor of Casablanka University (Razik Abdallah, Morocco, 1987), representative of UNESCO in Brasil (N-Unga Jose Jime, Angola, 1989), deputy minister of public health services of Angola (Majembe Pombala Ngonga, Angola, 1989), chief of military hospital of Panama police, Panama (Carolina Ramos, Panama, 1990), the best resident-doctor on gastroenterology in the USA in 1999 (Dixit Ninad, India, 1993).


The curricula of clinical disciplines chairs take into account specific features of regional diseases in different countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America. In view of this specificity the special problems are included in the examination cards of state graduation examinations. Annually the University chairs issue 10-12 text-books of methodics and other educational-methodical materials for the foreign students.

The University's administration supports constant contacts with the foreign graduates and associations of the graduates of VNMU, which exist in many countries of the world. The forms of these contacts are different, they are organized by the department of relations with the graduates. The most effective results of engaging foreign citizens in education has an individual work with the students and graduates, through whom the invitations to study are transmitted. In this respect the dean's office cooperates actively with countrymen associations of the students from Palestine, India, Jordan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Yemen, Syria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Cameroon, Iran, Iraq.

There is a tradition of presence of the graduates' parents, their speech before the graduates at the graduation ceremony.

All foreign citizens having senior secondary school certificate or higher university/college degree from a recognized academic institution are eligible for admission to National Pirogov Memorial Medical University Vinnytsya (recognized by WHO). The languages of instruction are Russian, Ukrainian and English. Foreign citizens who don't know the Russian language or having incomplete command of it may study the Russian language at the Preparatory Faculty of the University along with the pre-university course.


National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya, in accordance with the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers decree No.1238 dated 05.08.1998 (items 5, 18 "Admission rules for foreign citizens and stateless persons to study at higher educational institutions"), issues invitations to foreign citizens who want to study at the Preparatory Faculty, Faculty of Medicine #1, Faculty of Medicine #2 (specialities: Medical Psychology, Paediatrics), Dentistry, Pharmacy (specialities: Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy) and for Post-graduate studies in 53 medical specialities.

The official period of admission to the Preparatory Faculty is August, 15 to November, 15 of the current year, to the main faculties.

The use of the university's libraries is included in the tuition fee.

During the period of education a place in a room of the students' hostel, furnished accordingly to the social standards is given for the extra charge (12-40 USD per month). The tuition fee does not include obligatory medical insurance and medical examination which are paid by the students themselves on ar- I rival to the University (approximately 80 USD). Also students pay for their transfer from the airport "Boryspil" to Vinnytsya (approximately 100 USD).

To get direct admission to the first year of study without undergoing the Preparatory Faculty candidates have to pass interview in Biology (Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry) or in Chemistry (Faculty of Pharmacy) and interview in Russian or English (with English as medium of instruction).
Studies at the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and the Preparatory Faculty start from the 1st of September. Therefore it is desirable for the student to arrive in Vinnytsya a week before the education commences.

After obtaining this information we shall consider the point of issuing the invitation letter for you. On obtaining the invitation to study, you should apply for the student visa at the Ukrainian Embassy abroad. In order to obtain visa and further concluding the tuition contract with the University, you should submit to the Embassy of Ukraine and to the University the following documents:
1.    filled in questionnaire;
2.    original and attested translation of senior secondary school certificate with subjects studied and marks/grades obtained;
3.    medical certificate, testifying the absence of HIV-AIDS-infection;
4.    original and attested translation of certificate of general medical examination verified by official medical institution from your country of living and dated not more than two months before coming to Ukraine;
5.    insurance policy for granting urgent medical assistance (except foreign citizens from countries that have agreements with Ukraine on free medical assistance);
6.    notary attested translation and copy of birth certificate;
7.    6 photos (size 4x6 cm);
8.    return ticket with open date of coming back to home-country valid within 1 year.

Documents No 2, 4, 6 should be authenticated in accordance with the law of the country of their issuance and legalized in the appropriate Ministry and the Embassy of Ukraine.

After visa obtaining and a ticket being booked you must inform our university not later than in a week before arrival about the date and exact time of your arrival, flight number to be met in Kyiv, in airport "Boryspil".




All foreign citizens having higher university/college degree from a recognized academic institution are eligible for admission to National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya. Foreign citizens who don't know the Russian language or having incomplete command of it may study the Russian language at the Preparatory Faculty of the University. National Pirogov Memorial Medical University Vinnytsya, in accordance with the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers decree No. 1238 dated 05.08.1998 issues invitations to foreign citizens who want to undergo Post-graduate studies in 53 medical specialities in the following forms:
Master of Medical science course (the term of training - 2-3 years);
Advanced training course (the term of training - up to 1 year);
specialized PG training in Medicine (clinical ordinatura) (the term of training - 2-5 years);
pure post-graduate studies, leading to Ph.D., M.D. Degree (the term of training - 3-5 years).

Master of Medical science course is also possible in English. The average living expenses are 2000 USD yearly. Prior to admission to PG. studies if the language of instruction is Russian you will undertake the Russian language course. The cost of it is included into 1st year tuition fee.

Vinnytsya state was formed on February 27, 1932, is situated in the central part of the Right-bank Ukraine and consists of 27 districts. It has an area of 26500 km2 (4,5 % of the territory of Ukraine). The population of the state makes 1,815,000, including urban population - 882,000. Vinnytsya state is located in forest- steppe zone within the limits of the Podolsk hills. There are nearly 230 rivers within the state, each more than 10 kms in length, and the two major ones are the Pivdennyy Bug and the Dniester. Vinnytsya has a moderately continental climate with mild winter and warm humid summer. Vinnytsya State has powerful multibranch agroindustrial complex. Five universities, 453 medical establishments, 31 health-resorts function there. Theatres - 2, cinemas, cultural centres, clubs - 1256. Monuments of history and culture - 3144, museums - 20. The museum of the world famous surgeon N.I. Pirogov is very popular, his body is embalmed and is kept in the burial vault near the museum.

Brief description of Vinnytsya city
Vinnytsya is the administrative, economic, regional centre of Ukraine. The city is located on the banks of the river Pivdennyy Bug, 260 kms to the south of the capital of Ukraine Kiev (3 hours by train), 14 hours by train from Moscow and 6 - from Odessa and from Lviv).

The city is connected by the railway and air paths to the western Europe and other countries. Average temperature in winter is 5 -7°C below zero, summer - 20 +27°C above zero. Vinnytsya is known as students' city of Ukraine, it is proud of such outstanding educational institutions as: Vinnytsya National Medical University, Vinnytsya National Technical University, Vinnytsya State Pedagogical University, Vinnytsya Trade and Economic Institute of Kyiv National Trade and Economic University, Vinnytsya State Agricultural University.

Living conditions
The university has 5 hostels, 4 canteens, 7 buffets. During the period of studies at the university, a place in a room at the student's hostel equipped with furniture, appropriate maintenance service, kitchens, shower rooms and other places of common use are provided for the extra charge. In the hostels the permitting regime functions and the appropriate protection is ensured.
For US $ 25-40 per month a place in the luxurious hostel room equipped with TV set, telephone, refrigerator is provided.

Health services
Medical aid is provided to the foreign citizens on the basis of the medical insurance policy.

The key medical services are given in the out-patient unit of the University. At the preventive health centre of the university, medical assistance and proper diet food is supplied. Free medical consultation by the professors of various specialized departments of the university is available.

On signing the contract of studies with the university, the medical insurance policy is made, which ensures assistance in the medical establishments of our city and Ukraine. It is renewed each academic year.

Cost of the student's travel ticket on all types of transport - US $ 4 per month.
Travel by taxi within the city - US $ 1-3.
Lunch, dinner or supper in university canteens - US $ 1-2.

Sports, Culture & Entertainment
In work with the foreign citizens we take into account their regional, religious, national, individual and psychological features. Active acquaintance of the foreigners with the history and culture of Ukraine, national traditions, life-style of modern Ukrainian youths is carried out.

Excursions to local museums, the museum of N.I. Pirogov, to educational institutions and enterprises of Vinnytsya and the state are carried out; surveys of theatre shows, trips to the cities of Ukraine like Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa are organized.

In the educational work, in order to improve and master the Russian language, meetings with intellectuals, competitions on the best reciting of verses, songs, dance performances, scientific conferences in which teachers-advisors of academic groups and advisors of the respective foreign nationals also participate.

The introductory party of the students from different countries is held in an enthusiastic manner.

The public of Vinnytsya and the local mass media take interest in conducting at the University, state music-drama theatre the programmes and festivities of the countries from which foreign students are trained at our University. During national holidays and festivals, the foreign students acquaint the staff of the University, population of our city and state with their national art, they organize the exhibitions and quiz games, which tell about the history, culture, traditions of this or that country. Traditional on such celebrations is tasting of the dishes of national kitchen prepared by the students. The representatives of embassies, representation of firms of the foreign states in Ukraine participate in realization of celebrations. In the Rector's administration, the problems of teaching the foreign students, cooperation in training the medical personnel, development of public health services between VNMU, Ukraine and countries, whose interests represent the present officials are discussed. At the University the conditions for development of creative activities of the students are created in musical, vocal, dancing, literary etc. studios.

Physical training is included in the curricula of all faculties. Besides the students attend various sports sections; play football, basketball and volleyball being members of united university team on the championship of Ukraine among medical universities. The gymnasiums, grounds are given free of charge. During vacations the students can have a rest at the University base of rest located in Vinnytsya region and by the Black sea.


The University staff actively collaborates with 20 partner international higher educational institutions in 67 international educational and scientific programmes.

In 2006 organizational work of the University on admission of international students was commended by 2 Diplomas of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Since 2001 our University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA) entered into vast collaboration in the frames of ICOHRTA Programme (International Clinical Operational and Health Services Research Training Award). This project facilitates widening of international links not only in scientific, educational and medical-preventive spheres, but also in socio-economic ones.
The University also works on the point of enlarging of the list of the countries which recognize the National Pirogov Memorial Medical University Diploma.
Formation of the international students' contingent is carried out with the assistance of cultural attaches of Indian, Nigerian, Yemeni, Jordanian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Syrian, Palestinian, Iranian, Saudi Arabian and other Embassies.

During the last years with the purpose of acquaintance with educational, scientific and treatment work our University was visited by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of India , Delegation of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Dr. Laila Yaghi, Dr. Saleh Al-Akili, Dr. Nayef Al-Gharibe, Deputy Counselor of the Department in Ukraine of the Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Mr. Mohammed Al-Hawamle, Cultural Counselor Dr. Jamal Al-Debei, Cultural Attache Yasser Momani, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassadors of Palestine in Ukraine Walid Zakut, Halid Ahmed Arikat, Saudi Arabian Cultural Attache in Turkey Dr. Talal M. Alshaban, Prof. Mohsen Al Hazmi, Counselor for Scientific Affairs of the Iranian Embassy Ma- saud Bageri, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the Limozh University, France , Vice Marshal of the Lodz Region Stanistaw Olas and Rector of the Medical Unversity of Lodz Prof. Andrzej Lewiriski.
The result of these visits was the recognition of our University and recommendation to study at it.
